I got home That day and I met my mum seating outside the house cutting vegetables
“Good evening mum “I greeted which trigger her attention to me and she smiled follow by a frown.
“what happen to your cloth”she asked without replying my question.
“I went to play football “I answered facing my gaze on the ground cos I am already scared of the frown on her face.
“how is school today? “she asked diverting The question and I followed up chilly.
“school is fine mum,it was fun all through”
I lied to her cos I don’t want her to be worried,her Smile mean alot to me.
“lemme help you mum “I said moving toward her in the a bid to collect her knife and help her out.
“no, my son go and take your bath and read your books, I will call you when the food is ready”she retorted rebuking me.
“but mum….”
“no but, go and do what I said,you are in that school because of your intelligent and not my sweat “she interrupted my speech and I smiled.
“thank you mum”i retorted then I went inside the house to do as she commanded.

Later that evening when I have eaten my dinner, I went to the parlour and met my mum breaking melon seeds and I quickly sit-down and I join her.
“mum, is it true that mermaids exist inside isiama river? “I asked and she raised her head surprised with my question.
“who told you that ?”.
“they taught us African mystery in school but I don’t believe the teacher”.
“my son, the teacher is right,there are marmaids inside the river “.
“are they all wicked?”I asked again.
“no my son they are not wicked,a man called obinwa desecrated the water which trigger The anger of the marmaids and they started punishing the whole village,though they were later appease but they made a decree never to allow any of their own to come to the village ever again and so it has been ever since then”she explained while I listen with rapt attention and my curiosity got satisfied.
“my teacher said they became so wicked that was Why the elders made a decree that no mermaids should ever visit the village again “I explained and she smiled.
“can mere human stop supernatural?,if the mermaids choose to come and wage war on humans no one can stop them, they have powers beyond human”she explained and I smiled ,though I am still curious to know what happen at the principal office. I wanted to tell her about Adaego but I thought over it,i don’t want her to be worried because her son his seating along side a heartless girl.
“mom”i called slowly.
“yes son “.
“if a mermaid Grant us wealth will you accept it?”I asked and she smiled and she focus her attention solely on the melon she was breaking without replying my question and I let it be like that. I don’t know what trigger me to ask that question it just enter my mouth and I voice it was out.

I woke up the next day to meet the sun shining bright Already and my mum is still on her bed.
“oh God am finished today”
I exclaimed.we actually slept very late yesterday,breaking melon in almost half of the night. I quickly tiptoed out in other not to wake her up,and I quickly rushed through my morning chores then I took my bath. I wore my uniform,park my Books in my hands and Was set to tiptoed out and when she woke up.
“wisdom!!”.
She shouted and I became scared Directing my gaze on the floor.
“why didn’t you wake me up? “she asked.
“am sorry mom, I just feel you deserve to rest “I replied.
“what are you going to eat now?”
“don’t worry mum, Just take care of yourself I will be fine beside am already late “I said and she smiled. I gave her the money I made on the sale yesterday like I have always done but she rejected it.
“my son, you are in school now and you need to save money for somethings”
“no Mum, I don’t need anything all I ever wanted is a smile on your face “I said and she smiled then she gave me Two hundred naira from the money and she kept the rest.
“bye mum ”
I said and she smile again.
“go in peace my eyes ” she said and I zoom off,going to school bare footed again.

I was standing on the road side,waiting for a cab that will take me to school cos I knew I am d--n late and treking is not an option today.

I heard from my back,i make a u turn with my head and I saw Ekenne coming toward me with a bandaged head and he was wearing house Wears.
“Ekenne,what happen to your head? “I asked forgotten about the Fight the day before
“see jamb question o,No be that fight yesterday”.he retorted then I remembered.
“why you dey go school without shoes”he asked staring at my legs.
“na long story joor, una no suppose fight them na”i elucidated changing the topic That he diverted to.
“is that why you ran?, they are all in the hospital now o we beat nonsense commot from their body”he boosted.i knew Ekenne will make me late more if I don’t act fast, so I quickly try to cut the conversation,who cares if they Fight, or if they are in the hospital?,I did not send them to Fight so it is their cross. Fortunately for me a cab was passing by at that moment so I quickly stop it.
“see you when am back from school ”
I motioned To Ekenne then I hop into the car.

Cabs are not allow to enter the school vecinity so the cab man dropped me off school and I paid him one hundred and fifty naira from the money my mom gave to me,then I continue my journey with legs, bare footed to be precise.
The gateman open the get for me without complain and I enter the school to meet a scene that Swift me off my feet and makes me shivering with hot sweat steaming on my body,my penal Andreana became so vibrant pleading to be released,with just a stone thrown from me is… ………
